The Smallholder Livelihood Development Project in Eastern Indonesia (SOLID) is a collaborative initiative between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), designed to accelerate poverty reduction and regional development in Eastern Indonesia. Implemented from 2011 to 2019, the project targeted 224 villages in the provinces of Maluku and North Maluku, with an estimated 40,350 poor smallholder farming households as beneficiaries. Its main objective was to improve the living standards of communities through increased income and enhanced food security.
The project focused on participatory community empowerment through the establishment of village institutions such as Self-Help Groups (Kelompok Mandiri/KM) and Federations. Through four main components—Community and Gender Development, Agricultural Production and Marketing Support, Plantation Value Chain Development (particularly coconut, cocoa, and nutmeg), and Program Management—SOLID provided technical assistance and financial support in the form of Matching Funds and Revolving Funds.
In addition to strengthening agricultural skills, the project also facilitated the development of small-scale rural infrastructure, the improvement of post-harvest technologies, and the establishment of partnerships between local producers and broader markets.
