Livelihood Field School under the Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) Project - North Sumatra Province, Lot 1

Delivery of Livelihood Field Schools for coastal community groups across the mangrove rehabilitation sites of the Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) programme in North Sumatra Province. The assignment strengthens community capacity to develop sustainable mangrove-based livelihoods while supporting the durability of completed mangrove rehabilitation works.

The engagement covers 18 community groups (pokmas) across 7 districts, 24 sub-districts and 38 villages in North Sumatra — Langkat, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Batu Bara, Asahan, Labuhan Batu Utara and Labuhan Batu. Enterprises developed vary by group potential, including silvofishery, mud crab and soft-shell crab culture, shrimp grow-out, floating cage culture of barramundi and tilapia, mangrove ecotourism, nipa sugar processing, shrimp crackers, shrimp paste, batik crafts, and goat and sheep husbandry.

The scope of work comprises:

• Rapid assessment using the sustainable livelihood framework — vulnerability context, livelihood assets, institutions, strategies and livelihood outcomes.
• Baseline survey at inception and endline survey at completion, with pre-test and post-test analysis to measure participant knowledge gains.
• Development and updating of Field School modules based on rapid assessment findings.
• Delivery of Training of Trainers (ToT) for facilitators.
• Running six Field School sessions per group using an experiential learning approach built on observation, analysis and group decision making, including field practice through demonstration plots.
• Dissemination workshop on results and lessons learned, together with inception, progress and final reporting.

Each group involves a maximum of 15 participants with at least 30 per cent women. Gender and social inclusion principles are applied throughout, from rapid assessment to participatory evaluation, in coordination with the PIU, PPIU, local government, village government and relevant technical agencies.
